The small South American Acai berry has made its way into the health and fitness world for its reported health benefits such as weight loss and anti-aging. Acai is a fruit from the Acai palm and its benefits include being on par with other berries (e.g. blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries) in antioxidant levels. Although some of the health claims may be outrageous, there’s no denying that a fruit is better that say bacon. That is why an Acai bowl is the perfect on the go, as a snack, or as a meal. As a runner, I often find myself consumed by a hunger after a long run that clouds my judgement, and I reach for whatever is available, even if it’s unhealthy. That is why I started to keep some Acai smoothie mix in my freezer which I top off with some bananas, peanut butter, and granola to add some extra flavor. That’s the beauty of the Acai bowl, you can add whatever you’d like to adjust it to your taste and nutritional needs.
Whatever your fitness and/or dietary goals are, an Acai bowl can be an easy way to add more fruits to your diet and replace meals that may be unhealthy. For me it’s been a refreshing and tasty meal to have after a run.
